The Top Dos and Don’ts of Tape Hair Extensions
Tape hair extensions are rapidly becoming a favourite amongst stylists AND clients and there are so many reasons why! They feel natural and comfortable, they’re lightweight AND they’re not as damaging to your natural locks as some other methods when you take care of them properly.
One thing we all know is that any form of extensions is an investment and you want to be able to get the most out of them for the longest possible time, while keeping your hair looking fabulous.
Follow this simple list of Do’s and Don’ts for Tape Hair Extensions - to make sure you live happily ever after with your gorgeous locks!
DO’s of Tape Hair Extensions:
Invest in Quality.
I cannot stress this enough! The saying is true – “You get what you pay for” – this DEFINITELY applies to Tape Hair Extensions. Do your research and opt for quality as much as you possibly can! Your stylist can help you with this too and from my own experience, they really enjoy doing it! Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
We have a fantastic range of high quality tape hair extensions at Kiki – check them out here.
Use the right products.
Your stylists literally dedicate their lives to learning about the products they recommend. There is a big reason why they want you to take that bottle home with you! We have ALL experienced the difference between salon-recommended products and generic or supermarket versions. If you want your tape hair extensions to last as long as possible, using the right products is a must. It’s not just poor quality products that can build up around your adhesive and cause premature slipping but the WRONG product for your extension or adhesive type can cause this damage too. I could talk about the importance of this for the rest of this article but – to sum it up - talk to and listen to your stylist!
Choose a reputable salon.
If you are not 100% confident in your stylist then why are you going there? All extensions take a great deal of knowledge, training and expertise to apply. High-quality services might cost a few extra pennies but you cannot expect to get a long life from extensions placed by someone who does not know what they are doing. If you have questions about our stylists, products or services, why don’t you contact us!
Brush your hair more often.
This isn’t only fantastic for your scalp and your natural hair, but it’s also so important to prevent tangling of your extensions. Pick that brush up as many times a day as you possibly can! 3 to 4 times a day is perfect! On the brushing subject, talk to your stylist about what type of brush is going to best suit you. Loop brushes cause far less damage to extensions than regular brushes and are a worthwhile investment!
Braid your hair before bed!
This really helps with keeping your tangles at bay. Going to bed with wet hair is never a great idea (and not just because nanna says you will catch a chill), but if you HAVE to – BRAID IT FIRST! You will thank me for this in the morning. The more tangles you have to brush out, the more stress you are putting on your adhesive. Try to opt for Tangle Ties as much as possible, these guys are awesome for protecting your hair and preventing tangles.
Don’ts of Tape Hair Extensions:
Don’t go for your workout with fresh extensions!
Yes, you look awesome, but if you want your bond to adhere properly you need to avoid excessive sweating, swimming or washing your hair for the next 24 to 48 hours after application or maintenance. After that, life can go back to normal… IF you’re following the rest of this list!
Don’t apply your oils or conditioners above the mid-shaft of your hair.
Avoiding the base of the tape extensions can really help prolong their life. These products coming in to contact with your adhesive regularly is another way to help them slip and NO ONE wants that! It’s another plus that this method will keep your hair from looking oily for just a little bit longer!
Don’t be afraid to try different hairstyles!
One of the greatest things about tape hair extensions is how easy it is to style your hair without your extensions being visible! When applied correctly, your extensions should not show when you’re rocking your high pony or up-do. Check out our blog post on the best styling tools for your hair extensions! Step out of that comfort zone every now and then – you won’t regret it!
DON’T SKIP YOUR MAINTENANCE APPOINTMENTS!
This is the BIGGEST “No No” if you want to maintain your extensions properly! Adjusting your tape hair extensions is going to be your new lifesaver. Every 6 to 8 weeks is a normal time frame to expect to hear from your stylist, but let them get to know your hair and they will adjust this to better suit you! When these babies start to fall (which IS inevitable) or grow out with your natural hair growth, you will find it so hard to style properly. There is nothing attractive about seeing tape adhesive – don’t do this to yourself! Make the appointment when you are in salon and DON’T miss it!
Avoid DIY's!
If you want a colour change – go to your stylist! You have invested in these extensions and even if you’re the best packet-dyer in the universe (I used to be that girl...), just DON’T! If you’re using our range of tape hair extensions than no, it won’t damage them. We can’t say the same for other brands. But if you want to make sure your application is even then your 6 to 8 week maintenance appointment is a fantastic time to opt for one of our value packages and get your colour done properly at the same time!
